About This Old Lady

Welcome to the Old Lady Biz site. My name is Cathy Miller, the creator of this and multiple sites (you can check out below).

Being the middle child of seven and with a common name like Cathy Miller, I have always promoted the idea that each of us is unique. Let’s celebrate our differences.

For too long, I allowed my practical side (or perhaps fear) to dictate my life. I spent 30-plus years in the corporate life before breaking out for the life of a freelancer.

But I am thankful for both my corporate and freelance experiences. Both have enriched my life, even through the tough times – especially through the tough times.

What I love most is sharing our perspective on life. After all, people are endlessly fascinating. So, I hope through Old Lady Biz you find the joy of connecting with others to share your personal adventures and a smile.

To further those smiles, I created the Old Lady Biz Store with products celebrating the joys of reading, writing, and walking (and a bit of Old Lady stuff sprinkled in).

There’s something for my fellow 3-Day walkers, writer buddies, or anyone who enjoys (or suffers through) the writing exercise. And there’s also merch – I’m so hip – 😉 for those who love reading. So, check it out.

Old Lady Biz Websites – Past & Present

My freelance career began in November of 2008. Websites, blogs, and social media were a foreign language to me. Over the years, I developed multiple websites, each with its own focus. In my never-ending quest for a simple life, most have been consolidated into this site into the Reading, Writing, and Walking sections of this blog.

Simply Stated Business (SSB) was my first website. Launched in 2009, the site offered a place to showcase my business writing, my experience, and samples of my work.

A decade later (as I moved toward semi-retirement from business writing), SSB shifted its focus to become a site for small business owners or anyone looking to produce better business communication.

Check out Simply Stated Business for Tips, Tools, and Templates for better business communication.

Reading

One of the benefits of social media is the discovery of good reading. And, yes, the down side of social media is all the bad reading that exists. So, in this section of Old Lady Biz, let’s share the good and bad of what we’ve read and why we feel the way we do – whether that’s about books, blogs, or online chats.

To kick this section off, I imported some prior book reviews I’ve done at Simply Stated Business. I hope to review non-business book reviews as well (one of those goals I never found time for). I also plan to share other content I’ve read that touched me – in one way or another. I hope you’ll share your favorites, too.

Writing

What writer doesn’t dream of writing the next great novel? My big goal is writing both fiction and non-fiction books. I love writing. I love business writing. But I’ve only scratched the surface for more personal writing. At my original personal blog site, millercathy.com, I shared creative writing I wrote while following the word prompt site, Creative Copy Challenge.

One of the products that came from that writing was a detective series. I created an ebook of the original entries I shared on millercathy.com. Also from my old site were what I called Miller Musings. Those blog posts are observations from both my personal and business life. I also imported select Miller Musings to Old Lady Biz.

Walking

And now we come to a journey of the heart. I was in my early 50s before I personally knew someone diagnosed with breast cancer. Unfortunately, that person was my sister. The fabulous news is she is a survivor of more than two decades. It was her diagnosis that kicked me off the couch and onto the streets of San Diego in a 3-Day, 60-Mile Walk for the Cure.

Since that time, the 3-Day Walk has become an event I cannot walk away from. My first site about the 3-Day Walk, why60miles.com, shared posts and photos from the annual event. I have imported those posts to Old Lady Biz. But walking became more than a 60-mile trek. It literally restored my physical and mental health. Posts from millercathy.com about my reawakening to the world around me have also been imported to this site.
