How Your Social Media Lies Are Like Food Lies

by | Aug 9, 2011 | Miller Musings | 8 comments

Have you ever gotten serious about dieting and discovered little white lies about your food intake?

You know what I’m talking about.

  • I only eat the recommended fist-sized portion – maybe if you’re channeling the Incredible Hulk
  • I don’t snack between meals – like those clean-up bites after your children’s meals don’t count
  • I never eat after 7 PM – I guess that glass of wine has no calories

Hey, I’m not judging – been there, done that (except for the kids part – and only because I don’t have any).

We use those same little white lies in social media.

Social Media Lie #1 – I allot XX number of hours per week to social media.

Hmm-hmm. When was the last time you measured your time spent on social media?

  • Not the my scale is off by 5+ pounds kind of measurement
  • One where you actually write down the time spent

That fist-sized time is turning green.

Social Media Lie #2 – I stick to my social media schedule.

  • You have a master plan
  • You schedule time for social media
  • After all, that’s the productive thing to do

And smokers take only two, 10-minute smoking breaks during work hours.

Social Media Lie #3 – I only access social media for personal use after work hours.

I know, it’s not your fault when you are doing business on  your company’s Facebook page and someone sends you a personal message about their latest vacation.

  • You only took a quick peek at the photos
  • Refer back to #1 and #2

Excess Weight

We are shocked when we gain weight or don’t seem to get as much work done as we used to – after all our best efforts.

It really is a mystery.

Any resemblance between Wade and this post are purely coincidental.

I guess I am an anomaly? I keep to my scheduled allotment. Maybe not out of preference, but out of desperation to complete the rest of my tasks…

Ah, there’s one in every crowd, Roy. What are you trying to do, Roy? Make us look bad? LOL! 😀

Cathy, are you saying I’ve been lying to myself? Because I’m not. 😉
    I admit I don’t have a good social media plan . . . yet.
    I get your point. Thanks!

Okay, so now there are two of you – you and Roy. We mere mortals envy you. 😀 Thanks for stopping by, Sherrie!

    Hi Cathy,

I’m a disciplined dude, but I’ve definitely been there. Probably more in the “I shouldn’t be working because it’s after hours but am working department”, though 😉

Either way, it’s important to be honest with yourself. I read that the level to which a being is enlightened is the degree to which they are comfortable with their contradictions. Great food for thought, and a reminder to simply accept the fact that we are walking, living contradictions, even the most illuminated.

    Thanks for sharing.

I guess I didn’t know our blogging tribe had so many disciplined people. Hopefully, it will rub off. 🙂 Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Ryan!

LOL! Man, am I ever guilty of most of this! The difference is I admit my weakness – I cannot avoid Word Twist or Bejeweled Blitz on Facebook. It’s just part of my nature to be drawn where I oughtn’t go. 🙂

Yay, Lori! I knew I could count on you to be weak like me. 😀 Must be why I ♥ you 🙂
