Precious Escape

Precious Escape postPreviously, I shared my intent to kickstart some creative writing.

Colleague and friend, Jenn Mattern’s Quick Mystery site inspired me.

Judging by the time lapse between the first hit of inspiration and now, intent speaks louder than action.

Let’s see if I can remedy that.

This entry is drawn from a recent submission at my favorite word prompt site, Creative Copy Challenge. Lately, the challenge words have taken on a tougher exterior. A dictionary-looking-up toughness.

So you wouldn’t need Merriam-Webster at your side, I altered some of the words. I also expanded on the story a bit. I hope you enjoy.

Precious Escape

by Cathy Miller

The pleasant scent of the evening’s rain was an enigma to the unfolding scene. Her heart raced from thoughts provoking paralyzing fear.

She could do this. She must do this. Or die.

The languor of the night seemed to scream its silent threat. Her escape provided but a momentary reprieve from memories too frightening to recall.

She lingered as long as she dared in the inglenook of towering oak trees. Her harsh breath, a rhythm to her escape.

She had to move.

And so she ran.

Her bare feet no longer registered the slaps and stings of ground debris intent on inflicting more pain.  Burning lungs rasped out their support. Rushing air through the hushed sounds of escape.

Precious escape.

Her destiny rose before her. Lights extended a beckoning reach, wrapping her body in the warm felicity of hope. Evocative images of home flooded the ethereal backdrop of memories of a better time.

Home. She wanted to be home.

“Hello precious. Where are you going?”
