Equality Leadership: A Unique Approach

Mission Equality logoImagine an organization forming with a goal of extinction. What startup do you know that hopes one day to go away?

Yet that is what Mission Equality would love to happen. To live in a world that has the kind of equality leadership that makes the unique services of Mission Equality obsolete.

The Mission of Equality Leadership

The organization’s co-founders, Lea Jovy-Ford and Sharon Hurley Hall, along with a diverse global team, form the core services of Mission Equality.

  • The Equaliversity – a virtual university dedicated to leadership development with a foundation of equality
  • Support groups – designed for personal and work allyship and leadership

Mission Equality challenges the “prevailing frameworks, structures and ways of thinking about doing business…” It offers a much-needed perspective for a system built on inequality.

Black Paper on Equality: Part 1

Mission Equality (ME) shared its Black Paper on Equality: Part 1, a must-read for companies and organizations serious about equality for everyone.

Quote on Mission Equality Black Paper

The paper is an assessment that examines the following.

  • How we got here
  • What equality could look like
  • How we move from the “as-is” to the “to-be,” using education as the catalyst

ME’s Unique Approach

Think about the last business communication you shared. Whether you created it yourself or with a team, education is the thread that binds your work together.

  • Learning through research and the perspective of others
  • Acquiring and sharing knowledge with others
  • Reflection on needed changes

What happens with business communication that is always the same?

  • No new strategy
  • Duplicating what everyone else does
  • And sticking with it even when it doesn’t work.

Isn’t your goal to share something unique?

Mission Equality’s is no different in this regard. So, instead of going down the same diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) path, ME guides us to a “new path to equality.”

How? Through radical reimagining and discarding what is not working.

  1. ME dispels accepted beliefs that hinder equality.
  2. They redefine equality and what it could be.
  3. And offer a different process for change.

1. Dispelling accepted beliefs

ME dismisses the belief the current system is broken. Rather, it works exactly as designed.

  • A select few benefit from systems aimed at providing them with advantages.
  • In turn, the system suppresses the Global Majority.

Another accepted belief is the role of DEI. Although I am not certain if the belief is DEI is working or merely “proof” of a company’s efforts toward equity and equality.

  • The Black Paper states “clearly, DEI alone is not the answer.”
  • We need a new model to address representation, equity, accountability, and leadership.

2. Redefining Equality

ME offers four key areas for attaining real world equality (as illustrated below).

Key areas for equality

Each of the four areas have a significant impact on individuals and communities, whether it’s in business or social interaction. ME also tackles the confusion between the meaning of equity versus equality.

3. Offering a Different Process

A vision for an equal world remains a dream without a plan. ME offers a three-step process.

  1. Understanding where you’re starting from.
  2. Defining where you want to go (your vision).
  3. Figuring out the best way to get there.

The Black Paper on Equality provides a detailed explanation of its programs and services. And in a walk-the-walk proof, ME presents a case study on its own company as the first prototype for their unique approach.

Why I Recommend This Paper

What I love about this paper is its application to the individual as well as business organizations. The paper opened my eyes wide to concepts I had not thought about.

One of the most startling was the statement that “these systems are quite literally killing our planet with harmful and unsustainable practices…”

I have said that corporate and individual greed is one of our biggest problems. However, I do not think I made the conscious connection to our unequal world.

I encourage you to read this paper and take it in on an individual and business basis. If you have already read it, please share your thoughts in Comments.
