When the Easter Bunny Dies

Imagine embracing the Easter Bunny.

  • There’s warmth
  • There’s fuzziness
  • There’s a feel good feeling

Now imagine the feeling if the Easter Bunny dies.

That’s how I felt after reading a recent blog post.

A Warm and Fuzzy Feeling

Before I go on with my story, let me make clear that my problem is not with the blogger. It is the unfortunate message he delivered.

It started when I saw this video on a friend’s Facebook wall. Take a look and then come back for the rest of the story.

I’ll wait. The Power of Words YouTube Video

Great message, isn’t it?

A Powerful Disappointment

I told my friend it inspired me so much I was going to blog about the beautiful message. I knew I had seen this video before. Or had I?

Chalking it up to my baby boomer brain, I started doing a little background research on the video. That’s how I stumbled upon Paul Suggett’s post, The Power of Words – Especially When They Are Blatantly Ripped Off.

  • Turns out, I was right
  • I had seen the video before
  • Except not this video

I had seen the original – the 2008 Cannes Festival Short Story winner, Historia De Un Letrero. The film is a bit  longer, about 6 minutes. The shorter video clearly duplicated the story – right down to the blind man shaping his hands around the person’s shoes.

Wow. There’s no Easter Bunny

Despite the “Homage to Historia de un letrero” in the video’s brief credits, I felt the wind leave my sails. Suddenly, this beautiful story was about someone taking another artist’s genius. I agree with the blogger, the small “homage” does not make this okay. I wonder how many viewers even know it’s there.

Actions Speak Louder Than Words

There might come a time in the future where I’ll blog about that message – the one that made me feel all warm and fuzzy. For now, the warmth has been snuffed out.

What do you think? Had you seen the video? The film? How does it make you feel?

Live…Laugh…Love
